Disney’s Animal Kingdom Mt. Everest 5K Challenge

Did you know that this weekend on Sept. 27, 2008 was the Animal Kingdom’s first ever Mt. Everest 5K Challenge?! Over 4,000 people participated. This was not your ordinary 5K… this was a scavenger hunt/5K/obstacle course and it began at 7 pm in the Butterfly parking lot of the theme park.

The weather could not have been more perfect! It was an awesome pre-autumn evening here in Central Florida and the air was filled with the energy of the enthusiastic 5K’ers!!! I did not run… need to get back into training for that one. :) But, my husband and his friends did! This was his first race ever and I was so excited for him!!! The teams were arranged in pairs as men teams, women teams, co-ed teams and the serious racers were in the front of the starting line.

It was so much fun to watch! There were Energizer bunnies, pink afro ladies, jail house dudes, trojan guys, you name it, their were all sorts of crazy costumes to get in the spirit of finding the Yeti in Animal Kingdom. There was even an Indiana Jones complete with whip and leather bag! (He kept both on the entire race!!! )

You had to be at least 11 years of age to participate and at a certain height. Sure enough, we did see several young preteens as well as groups of athletic teenagers all working together. Both team members had to cross the finish line at the same time!

For the first ever event, I would say it went rather successfully. This is to say that there were no emergency trips made by the ambulances and true to Disney style, there were plenty of staff throughout the race as well as in the Medical tent… just in case.

This race was full of nothing but fun! It was part of Disney’s Endurance series! I keep wanting to convince my husband to participate with me for the Muddy Buddy in May 2009, but he’s not too keen on the “mud” part. (I’ll keep working on him though… )
